Motorcycle company Kawasaki Europe (KME) has officially declared that it fell victim to a cyber assault in early September, resulting in temporary disruptions to its operations. KME mentioned that despite the unsuccessful nature of the attack, it led to the isolation of its servers as a precautionary action.

Explained in a release on September 12, KME detailed that its IT division, in collaboration with external cybersecurity professionals, meticulously examined and purged all servers over the subsequent week before reintegrating them into the corporate network. By the onset of this week, more than 90% of KME’s server functionality had been reinstated.

However, a more severe turn of events occurred when the infamous ransomware gang RansomHub claimed to be behind the assault.

The hacking collective included Kawasaki in its dark web ransom portal on September 5, alleging the filching of 487 GB of data from the company’s systems.

RansomHub has initiated a countdown, warning to release all pilfered data unless their demands are met before the deadline. The content of the compromised data remains uncertain, but the potential involvement of customer details cannot be dismissed at this juncture.

Kawasaki has stressed that its business activities, encompassing dealerships, third-party suppliers, and logistic operations, have remained unaffected by the event.

The company has enacted escalated surveillance procedures and reinforced access restrictions to forestall unauthorized intrusions in the future.

This intrusion on Kawasaki arises amid an upsurge in RansomHub’s endeavors. This group has ascended as a notable participant in the arena of cybercrime, particularly post the cessation of other major ransomware operations such as BlackCat/ALPHV.

As per a collective cautionary notice from the FBI, CISA, and the Department of Health and Human Services, RansomHub has breached no less than 210 victims across multiple vital U.S. infrastructure sectors since its initiation in February.

As the inquiry unfolds, Kawasaki has yet to address requests for supplementary remarks concerning the assertions put forth by RansomHub.
